An ambitious Malaysian woman and a cheeky British man meet through a local classified ad (that was posted as a bit of a joke) while both living in London, England. They go on a few dates, she moves to Houston, Texas and is on the phone breaking up with him when she hears the door. She opens it to see him standing in her doorway. He moves in for 2 weeks and before he leaves to go back to London, he proposes to her at a Padres game at the Astrodome. Her response: "Yes. Now shut up so I can watch the game!".
Two kids and many grandpets later, and us Langleys have formed quite the motley crew.
Martin (aforementioned cheeky Brit), Lucy (the ambitious Malaysian), MeiLee (their eldest and favorite daughter), her husband Jeremy, and Jon (their youngest and least behaved) have all made their way (separately) to Denver, Colorado where they still get together for weekly family dinners around the table.
MeiLee and Lucy have taken on most of the ideation and cooking for our recipes while Martin focuses on the filming and video production.
Jon and Jeremy are the certified (and very willing) taste testers. Granted, not all of the recipes are winners at first, so their job takes dedication, love, and the occasional soft criticism.
Lucy's culinary adventure began in the heart of Borneo, Malaysia, where the flavors of her hometown Kuching sparked her lifelong love for cooking. Fast forward a few years, and she's traded in her nursing scrubs for an apron, fully embracing retirement with a spatula in hand. Now, she's having a blast experimenting with the Malaysian recipes she grew up with, getting creative with whatever ingredients she can find locally. With her husband Martin by her side, trying to capture every moment on camera in their cozy kitchen like he's the next Spielberg, Lucy's patience might be her most important ingredient. She's all about tweaking traditional Malaysian dishes to fit their small space, sharing the joy and flavors of her heritage with everyone willing to try a bite.
MeiLee's cooking journey is all about mixing it up with a bit of Malaysian spice and everything nice, right from her not-so-expert kitchen in Colorado. Not exactly a master chef, MeiLee juggles her corporate life with her passion for Malaysian cooking, often transforming traditional recipes into "curry in a hurry" to fit her busy schedule. Guided by her mom Lucy's wisdom and the rich tapestry of Malaysian cuisine, she's always excited to experiment and adapt her family's recipes, making them accessible with ingredients from the local grocery store. Sharing these experiments with her husband Jeremy and their friends, MeiLee's making sure everyone gets a taste of Malaysia, one laugh and quick stir-fry at a time.
Martin, Lucy's other half, has fully embraced his retirement by donning the hats of cinematographer, sound mixer, and, most importantly, the chief taste tester in their culinary adventures. He's plunged headfirst into the world of kitchen cinematography, rigging up their cozy cooking space with all the gadgets to capture Lucy's magic in high definition. Always Lucy's biggest fan, he cheers her on from behind the lens as she whips up her Malaysian delights, even if he occasionally grumbles about her speedy cooking not waiting for his perfect shot. Despite his playful critiques, they're an unbeatable duo, mixing love, laughter, and a dash of cinematic flair into every dish they create together.
